Speaking at a conference organised by Nomura in Singapore, the Indian Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, stated: “We are trying our level best that the day will come when we don't need to import any fuel from any country and that we will be self-sufficient.”
Nevertheless, Reuters reports that the minister was unable to provide an exact timeline for these plans because of challenges in both the availability and distribution of alternative fuels in India, including LNG.
Gadkari said: “Auto-rickshaws are using LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) now... LNG is important but the availability of LNG and distribution is a big challenge... we have to develop that.”
Gadkari added that the country is developing LNG bunker ports, and that it has plans to develop its electric vehicle fleet.
