Pakistan bans ships in its waters from using open-loop scrubbers

Open-loop scrubbers strip the sulfur from marine fuel, and empty the residue into the sea. It is expected that these ship operators will now have to turn to conventional scrubbers or LNG in order to align with the new regulations.
This decision by Pakistan will create unexpected costs for shipping companies, who have bought the open-loop scrubbers at over US$1 million each.
A circular note sent to Reuters from Pakistan’s ports and shipping ministry said: “It would be advisable to switch over either to closed-loop mode or to compliant fuel instead well in advance of the vessel’s arrival at the port areas.”
According to Reuters, Malaysia, Singapore and Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, which are all marine refuelling hubs, have already banned the use of open-loop scrubbers. China, meanwhile, is set to extend the ban on scrubber discharge to more coastal regions.
