Transco pipeline delivers record volumes

Williams has announced that it recently delivered a record amount of natural gas on its Transco interstate gas pipeline.

The pipeline provides essential services to gas distribution companies, power generators, LNG exporters and other customers along both the Gulf Coast and the Eastern Seaboard.

According to the statement, the pipeline is the largest volume natural gas transmission system in the US, and Transco managed to deliver a record 15.68 million dekatherms (dt) on 21 January. The new peak-day mark surpasses the previous high that was set on 5 January last year. Transco claims that its system (stretching from South Texas to New York City) also established a new three-day market area delivery record, with an average of 15.30 million dt from 30 January to 1 February this year.

In the statement, Williams claims that these records were possible because of additional firm transportation capacity created by a number of fully-contracted Transco expansions completed last year and early this year (Gulf Connector; Atlantic Sunrise; Garden State Phase II). Together, Williams claims that these expansions added over 2.3 million dt of firm transportation capacity to the existing pipeline system.

Alan Armstrong, president and chief executive officer of Williams, said: “The recent frigid conditions across the country are an important reminder of the vital role transmission pipelines play in delivering the natural gas necessary to keep millions of Americans safe and secure, especially during winter periods of peak demand.

“The incremental capacity from the fully-contracted Transco expansion projects placed into service in 2018 and early 2019 reflects an increase of about 16% in Transco’s design capacity – which has helped position us to meet the growing demand needs of our customers.”

According to the statement, it is expected that construction will begin on five further Transco projects this year: Riverdale South to Market; Hillabee Phase 2; Northeast Supply Enhancement; Gateway; and Southeastern Trail). Together, they will create approximately 1.15 million dt of additional pipeline capacity this year and next year.
