The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released a statement claiming that it has approved short-term LNG exports from the Corpus Christi liquefaction project to non-free trade agreement countries over a period of two years.

The order was issued to Cheniere Marketing LLC and Corpus Christi Liquefaction LLC (collectively, Corpus Christi), and authorises initial commissioning volumes and other exports pursuant to short-term contracts from the project in a volume of 2.1 billion ft3/d of gas. In September this year, the DOE issued a similar order that authorised short-term exports from the project to free trade agreement countries.

Rick Perry, US Secretary of Energy, said: “For the first time in 60 years, the US is now the world’s largest producer of oil and natural gas, and we are now exporting natural gas to 30 nations on five continents.

“Approving short-term LNG exports from projects like Corpus Christi is just one example of how the Administration is pursuing energy dominance and boosting our economy.”

According to the statement, the two-year export period will commence either on 31 December this year, or on the date of the first export from the project (later this year) – whichever happens first. The DOE claims that the short-term authorisation issued to Corpus Christi is not additive to Corpus Christi’s existing long-term LNG export authorisations. Instead, the order enables LNG exports pursuant to short-term contracts and for the initial commissioning volumes from the project.
