TransCanada Corp. has released a statement claiming that it has received the final two (out of 10) pipeline and facilities permits from the BC Oil and Gas Commission for the Coastal GasLink Pipeline Project. Two permits are related to the pipeline-related facilities, whilst eight relate to pipeline construction.

The pipeline will connect to the proposed LNG Canada export facility near Kitimat, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada. The project pipeline and facilities are now approved for both construction and operation.

Each of the permits includes up 70 conditions that will govern the project’s implementation. These conditions relate to the following:

  • Ongoing reporting to the regulator.
  • Notification of affected parties during construction.
  • Engagement with First Nations.
  • Conservation of heritage.
  • Stream crossings.
  • Clearing of land.
  • Wildlife.
  • Stability of terrain.
  • Engineering.

The CEO of TransCanada, Russ Girling, said: “This is a significant regulatory milestone for our project, which is a key component of TransCanada's growth plan that includes more than CAN$13 billion in proposed natural gas pipeline projects which support the emerging liquefied natural gas industry on the British Columbia Coast.

“Acquiring these 10 permits demonstrates our commitment in developing this project to the highest standards of environmental protection while delivering benefits to British Columbians and Canadians for decades to come.”

A final investment decision (FID) is expected to be taken by the pipeline’s customers – the joint venture (JV) partners of LNG Canada – in late 2016. If the partners choose to proceed with the project at that point, then construction will commence in 2017.
