European business organisation discusses future of the gas sector

16 plant directors attended the meeting, their plants making up 90% of European regasification capacity.

At the meeting, three major challenges for European gas companies were highlighted: the distribution of LNG on a small scale; transparency of the gas market; and using gas as a transition fuel towards renewable energy.

Reganosa claims that all terminals on the continent will work towards turning regasification plants into small scale LNG distribution centres, particularly for marine fuel. This is expected to be a decisive factor in achieving cleaner shipping, due to emission reductions. GLE also expects that natural gas will consolidated as the transition fuel towards decarbonisation, and as a back-up fuel once renewable energies are fully implemented. Similarly, the meeting also unified criteria to improve the transparency of the gas market.

Win Groenindijk, the President of GLE, said that progress of the sector to the new environment has already started, because “our plants are becoming LNG distribution centres also retaining its conventional role, which remains vital for the gas system.”
