I want to highlight two recent threats to pipeline assets, which emerged last month. One of these threats was overestimated; the other was brought starkly into focus. One was predicted and prepared for, but arrived having already spent its force. The other escalated suddenly and now remains a geo-political question mark. I’m writing about Hurricane Gustav as it approached the offshore infrastructure and oil refineries situated in or on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico; and about the threat of the recently aggravated Russian-Georgian conflict to the BTC pipeline and other Caspian supply routes.
