Reuters is reporting that Deputy US Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette has expressed that the US is eager for Qatar, the number one global LNG supplier, to challenge Russia’s dominance of gas supplies in Europe.

According to Brouillette, the US has been in talks with Qatar regarding the supply of LNG to Germany and other European importers. The US’ vision is reportedly that these countries break their reliance on Russian gas/LNG by switching to Qatari and US imports.

Germany is a particularly significant target as Russian gas accounts for 60% of its total yearly imports. Furthermore, these import quantities are set to rise as construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline between Russia and Germany, via the Baltic Sea, is due to be completed this year. The US has warned German companies about possible sanctions regarding this project with Russia.
