Bomin Linde has announced that, at the end of September 2016, it carried out the initial LNG bunkering operation for the Searoad Mersey II RoRo ferry.

The ferry is still under construction at Flensburger Schiffbau-Gessellschaft (FSG), but, once completed, will operate between Tasmania and Melbourne, Australia, becoming Australia’s first LNG-powered RoRo ferry. The ferry’s tank system features four dual-fuel engines (two main engines and two gensets) and does not have its own LNG tanks. Instead, it utilises LNG trailers that are connected to the drive system after being filled with LNG.

This initial bunkering operation was carried out in Odense, Denmark, where the ferry sailed from on a test run back to Flensburg. The operation officially started Linde’s long-term cooperation with FSG for supplying LNG-powered vessels.

Günter Eiermann, Technical Director at Bomin Linde LNG, said: “The new tanker-to-tanker process went smoothly and is thus an additional option for using LNG for marine propulsion.

“Following the successful start, I am especially looking forward to further cooperation with Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft.”

Holger Jacobs, project engineer at FSG, added: “Bomin Linde LNG gives us flexible full service in supplying LNG for initial fuelling. With the fuelling of the Searoad Mersey II our long-term cooperation has begun very successfully.

“We are already in negotiations for additional newbuildings.”
