EnergyAustralia to purchase gas from Australian import terminal

Reuters reports that EnergyAustralia – the third largest energy retailer in Australia – is therefore the first customer to agree to purchase gas from the Port Kembla LNG facility, backed by JERA, Marubeni Corp. and Squadron Energy.
According to Reuters, before a final investment decision (FID) on the AUS$250 million project is made, the Australian Industrial Energy joint venture is looking to lock in customers for gas. Reportedly, the plan is to moor a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) at the port, which will be capable of importing approximately 2 million tpy of LNG.
Reuters reports that this will be enough to supply approximately 100 PJ/yr to New South Wales, which currently depends on neighbouring states for the majority of its gas requirements.
According to Reuters, Australian Industrial Energy has reached an agreement to provide 15 PJ/yr of gas to EnergyAustralia over a five-year period at an oil-linked price. These supplies will commence as of January 2021.
