Fluxys and Swedegas start cooperation for LNG project in Gothenburg

LNG Industry,

Fluxys has announced that it has commenced cooperation with Swedegas for the development of an LNG project in the port of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Swedegas is investing in an LNG bunkering facility in the port of Gothenburg. This will be the first LNG facility in the port. Fluxys will facilitate the delivery of LNG with the construction of a second truck loading bay in Zeebrugge.

The investment marks a starting point for an LNG facility that can be expanded in due course to also supply Swedish industry with LNG. Delivering LNG in special isolated LNG containers or LNG trucks from Zeebrugge will allow for a flexible response to demand for small scale LNG in this market. In addition to this, the project will consolidate the Zeebrugge terminal’s standing as a major center for small scale LNG in northwest Europe.

The new LNG infrastructure in Sweden – consisting of an unloading station, a cryogenic pipeline and bunkering equipment – will enable vessels to refuel with LNG whilst loading or unloading at the quayside. Currently, the infrastructure is planned to become operational in 2018. In order to accommodate the loading of LNG containers and LNG trucks travelling to Gothenburg, Fluxys LNG claims that it is set to build a second truck loading bay at its LNG terminal in Zeebrugge. The company claims that this will help keep waiting times to a minimum and allow the terminal to continue to meet increasing demand.

The European Commission is providing financial support for the project through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). This facility subsidises projects that boost synergies between the energy and transport sectors with a view to achieving a low-carbon future and strengthening the internal European energy market.
