Sempra asks FERC to commence pre-filing review of proposed expansion

The recently approved liquefaction project is located in Port Arthur, Texas, US. The proposed expansion will see two liquefaction trains added, located next to trains 1 and 2 in the base project. LNG produced from trains 3 and 4 will then be stored and exported using storage tanks and marine facilities approved as part of the base project.

The expansion will increase the project’s production capacity from 13.5 million metric tpy to 27 million metric tpy. Sempra claims that the additional facilities will be located wholly within the property certified for the base project.

In its request to FERC, Sempra proposes to file its formal application for the proposed expansion pursuant to Section 3 of the Natural Gas Act (NGA0 in January 2020, roughly six months from the expected date of commencement of the pre-filing review process for the expansion project.

In that application, Sempra claims that it will ask the commission to authorise the siting, construction and operation of the expansion project by no later than January 2021. The company anticipates requesting authorisation to commence construction in March 2022.
