Annova LNG receives authorisation for non-FTA exports

Annova LNG has announced that it has received authorisation from the US Department of Energy (DOE) to export LNG to nations where the US does not have a free trade agreement (FTA).

Authorising Annova LNG to export LNG to non-FTA countries will allow the company to help coal-reliant nations diversify their energy supply with lower-carbon, US-produced natural gas. According to the statement, the 20-year authorisation does not include countries with which trade is prohibited by US law or policy.

Omar Khayum, the CEO of Annova LNG, said: “This authorisation from the DOE allows us to reach more customers worldwide and is another milestone accomplished as we make progress towards a final investment decision.

“Exporting natural gas through our well-controlled, renewable-powered liquefaction process to non-FTA countries that are heavy coal consumers will help reduce worldwide greenhouse gas emissions, which benefits us all.”

The DOE has authorised exports of approximately 360 billion ft/yr, which corresponds to 6.95 million tpy, the optimal production capacity of the facility. Annova LNG claims that it is planning to commence operations at 6.5 million tpy, and increase output as operating conditions and commercial demands allow.

The construction of the facility, which is located in the Port of Brownsville, Texas, was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on 22 November 2019.

Khayum added: “Our disciplined focus on structure, strategy and sustainability differentiates Annova LNG from our competitors and underpins our ability to create long-term value for our customers.

“Annova LNG is positioned to be one of the most sustainable and reliable providers of LNG from the US.”

The LNG facility plans to use electric-driven compressor engines and source its electricity through 100% carbon-free renewable energy resources.
