PetroChina unit’s Rudong LNG facility to be repaired by November

Reuters is reporting that Kunlun Energy Co. Ltd., a unit of PetroChina Co. which runs the company’s receiving terminals, has announced its plans to complete repairs at its Rudong LNG import terminal by mid-November.

The Rudong LNG facility has been operating with reduced capacity since 21 September, when a tanker struck a bridge connecting the facility’s island to the mainland during a typhoon. As a result of the collision, the bridge, which carries a gas pipeline connected to an onshore regasification facility, was partially damaged.

According to sources, these cuts to capacity have come at a difficult time, as importation of LNG typically increases during this period ahead of peak winter demand. Nonetheless, sources have also reported that the facility has managed to continue to deliver fuel to customers via LNG trailers. Chinaoil, PetroChina’s trading unit, has also managed to reduce the burden on Rudong by distributing some of its intended LNG capacity to the company’s other two receiving terminals in Tangshan and Dalian.

Volumes of LNG into Rudong reportedly fell by almost 50% to 360 000 t in September, after receiving approximately 650 000 t of LNG in August (nearly 13% of China’s overall LNG imports).
