The LMG 290-DEG design is 133 m long, 21.5 m wide, and will be capable of carrying 290 cars on two vehicle decks, as well as 1500 passengers. The vessel’s propulsion will be based on a gas-electric system using three dual-fuel engines.
The ferry will be constructed in Turkey by Sefine Shipyard. It is scheduled for delivery in 2018, and will be the first ferry to operate on LNG fuel in the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, the vessel has been optimised to operate across the Strait of Messina between Villa San Giovanni and Messina in Sicily – and area prone to high current. The vessel will also have an EU Class B certificate, meaning it will be also be able to operate on more open routes, such as to the Aeolian Islands.
