Gibraltar uses LNG to power homes for first time ever

The Government of Gibraltar has announced that homes on the territory have used electricity generated by LNG for the first time ever.

According to the statement, between 11.45 am and 12.15 pm on 19 January, Engine No5 generated power and fed 5 MW of electricity into the distribution system.

This was the first test of many to one of the dual engines. Commissioning is reportedly set to continue over the next few weeks.

Minister for Energy, John Cortes, said: “It is s privilege to witness the first ever generation of power in Gibraltar with LNG. These are the cleanest, least polluting 5 MW of electricity ever produced in Gibraltar. Gibraltar must be proud of what we are achieving here.”
