BC Ferries has announced that the Salish Orca has departed Gdansk, Poland, and set sail for British Columbia (B.C.), Canada. The Salish Orca is the first of three Salish Class vessels, and is the company’s first LNG-fuelled vessel.

Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. is responsible for delivering the vessel to B.C. and has contracted with an international ship delivery specialist. BC Ferries will take final acceptance and ownership of the ship once the final inspection has been carried out upon delivery.

The 10 440 nautical mile journey will take approximately 45 – 55 days, and will include refuelling stops in Santa Cruz, the Canary Island and Panama City, after transiting the Panama Canal and sailing up the west coast of North America to B.C.

The vessel is scheduled to arrive in January 2017 for crew training and familiarisation. It is scheduled to start service on the Powell River to Comox route in Spring 2017.

Mike Corrigan, President and CEO of BC Ferries, said: “This is an exciting day for BC Ferries as our newest ship, Salish Orca, is one step closer to joining our fleet.

“We look forward to introducing a new ship into service for our passengers on the Northern Sunshine Coast, which will improve reliability and customer service for years to come.”
