DEME Group has announced that it has ordered a next generation offshore installation vessel, Orion.

The vessel will be constructed by COSCO in China, and is scheduled for delivery in 2019. It will have a total installed capacity of 44 180 kW, and will feature a high-tech crane with a lifting capacity of 3000 t at more than 50 m. The loads can be lifted to more than 170 m high. The vessel will be 216.5 m long and capable of accommodating a 131-person crew.

Orion will feature dual-fuel engines and be capable of running on LNG. It will have a Green Passport and Clean Design notation, as well as other environmental innovations on board, such as a waste heat recovery system that converts heat from the exhaust gasses and cooling water into electrical energy.

Orion will be deployed by a subsidiary of DEME, GeoSea, which will use it for the construction of the largest offshore wind farms, to service the oil and gas industry, and for the decommissioning of offshore installations.

The Managing Director of GeoSea, Luc Vandenbulcke, said: “With Orion we will be uniquely positioned to meet the future requirements of our customers and the trend towards larger capacity turbines and bigger wind farm projects, delivering energy at lower costs. Orion will be capable of installing mega monopiles at greater depths. With DP3 technology the offshore installation vessel can continue operations under the most challenging conditions.”
