CIMC Raffles starts construction of LNG-powered newbuilding

CIMC Raffles has announced that it has formally started construction of a new LNG-powered 5,800 LM series MegaRoRo newbuilding.

The shipyard received an order for two such vessels, with an option for two additional vessels at a future date. On 30 March 2020, a button was pushed to activate the steel cutting machine in the Yantai shipyard, officially commencing the construction process.

MegaRoRo vessels officially entered force on 18 April 2019, and are the world’s biggest LNG-powered and ice class newbuildings. The project concept was developed by Danish Naval Architect Knud E. Hansen (KEH) and classified by Lloyd’s Register. The vessels are 241.70 m long, 35.20 m wide, with 5800 lane m, and have a speed of 20 knots. Each vessel will feature two Type C LNG tanks with a capacity of 685 m3. The vessels will be utilised in harsh European waters, with ice thickness up to 1.0 m. They therefore meet the Finnish-Swedish ice class 1A Super and winterisation requirement.

Ni Tao, Executive Vice President of CIMC Raffles, said: “Even though the project execution like technical communication and supply chain negatively influenced by the spreading coronavirus outbreak, we now formally start the vessel within schedule which provide the solid base of the project’s delivery on time. During the earlier phase of great support and positive cooperation from owner, class society, design company and suppliers thoroughly, we all make a good and sufficient constructing preparation under the serious epidemic situation.”
