Excelerate’s FSRU reaches new milestone

Excelerate Energy has announced that its floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), Explorer, has successfully completed send-out performance tests and reached a send-out capacity of 1 billion ft3/d.

Dubai Supply Authority (DUSUP) entered into a long-term charter with Excelerate for the vessel in 2014 in order to meet the increasing demand for natural gas in the Emirate. As part of the agreement, Excelerate upgraded and customised the vessel for DUSUP’s requirements. The vessel entered dry-dock for the modifications in October 2015, and the work was completed in December 2015.

The modifications included the following:

  • High pressure vaporisers and high pressure pumps were installed on the vessel, increasing the regasification send-out capacity to 1 billion ft3/d. Originally, the regasification send-out capacity was 690 million ft3/d.
  • A dual-fuel generator power module was also installed on the vessel, allowing more fuel-efficient power generation.
  • A bunker port was also added to the FSRU, enabling small scale LNG offtakers to bunker LNG directly from the vessel. This allows DUSUP to provide small scale LNG supply services to the local area.

The President and CEO of Excelerate, Rob Bryngelson, said: “We approach each of our projects as partnerships and work closely with our customers, like DUSUP, to provide a tailored solution that will serve their specific needs for the long run. We are committed to investing in the advancement of our technology to achieve this.

“Also significant is that even though the Explorer was commissioned in 2008, with upgrades, she has achieved the highest send-out rate of any FSRU in the world […] proving that a newbuild FSRU is not always the best option, especially when timing is critical.”
