Russia receives energy security boost from launch of first FSRU

LNG Industry,

According to the latest Reuters report, President Vladimir Putin recently opened Russia’s first LNG FSRU. During the ceremony, the President noted that the launch of such a facility would provide Russia with greater energy security.

The FSRU, Marshal Vasilevskiy, is the first of its kind in Russia. It is currently being operated by Gazprom and has been established in Kaliningrad after loading its first cargo in Singapore. The facility bypasses pipelines running through Lithuania, providing energy security in the case of these supplies being disrupted.

The Russian government’s decision to establish this FSRU was reportedly made in order to reduce the risks associated with gas transportation to Kaliningrad (home to a Russian Baltic Fleet base). The timing of this decision comes as the EU is increasing its efforts to reduce its dependency on Russian energy supplies.
