LNG Industry,
According to Reuters, Golar LNG has been in talks with Nigerian officials regarding the establishment of an LNG-to-power project. Once operational, the project could use a Golar vessel to receive LNG shipments.
Golar has been increasingly expressing desires to expand beyond its primary LNG shipping and terminals business. Its 50% ownership stake in the Brazilian Sergipe power project, for which it will be providing a FSRU to receive and process LNG, is evidence of this.
Robert Carter, Chief Commercial Officer for Golar, told Reuters that the company was considering the prospect of a “fully integrated gas and power project” in Lagos. He elaborated by stating, “We’re in discussions with Nigerian authorities. We’re trying to develop a terminal there that could include the utilisation of domestic LNG supplies.”
Golar’s plans to supply a vessel to import LNG as part of a larger power facility corresponds to a typical structure and design of an LNG-to-power project. FSRUs are often used in this capacity as an LNG import terminal. Pipelines connect the FSRU to the rest of the facility and distribute the regasified gas.
Nigeria is a large oil and gas producer, however it is still reliant on fuel imports due to poor infrastructure and governance of its energy sector.
