ABS grants AIP for Altair’s innovative LNG containment design

LNG Industry,

ABS has granted approval in principle (AIP) to Altair for its Donut Tank System (CDTS) LNG containment design, which is based off of a patent that was first filed almost 40 years ago.

The essential design is a near prismatic shape, which uses 12 interconnected cylinders. This will provide the structural efficiency associated with spherical tanks and the volumetric efficiency of a membrane tank. Altair claims that the CDTS will be especially suitable for operations in heavy seas at any fill level. In addition to this, Altair claims that its low profile – when compared to spherical tanks – reduces hydrostatic loading.

Christopher Wiernicki, the Chairman, President and CEO of ABS, said: “ABS continues to review innovative LNG designs, drawing on 50 years of experience in the safe handling, storage and transport of gas […] As designers apply new solutions to gas carrier challenges, ABS will support this process with approvals that enable LNG shipping to move forward in safety.”

Only recently, ABS announced that it had granted AIP for China National Offshore Oil Co’s (CNOOC) gas block terminal design.
