Philly Shipyard Inc. – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philly Shipyard ASA – has held the keel laying ceremony for a new product tanker, which is being constructed for a Kinder Morgan Inc. subsidiary – American Petroleum Tankers (APT). The vessel will be the first of four tankers to be delivered to the company, and will be 600 ft long and able to carry 50 000 t of both crude oil and refined petroleum products. The tankers are all based on Hyundai Mipo Dockyards’ design, and will be able to be converted to LNG-fuel in the future.

Steinar Nerbovik, the President and CEO of Philly Shipyard, said: “Today marks our 25th keel laying celebration and I couldn’t be more proud of the 1200 men and women of Philly Shipyard for their unyielding pride and passion that continues to bring all of our vessels to life.”

Robert Kurz, the Vice President of Kinder Morgan Terminals and President of APT, said: “This is an exciting day for Kinder Morgan. We look forward to taking delivery of this state-of-the-art vessel at the end of 2016.”

The four vessels being built for APT are scheduled for delivery in 2016 and 2017. Two other 50 000 DWT product tankers for Crowley Maritime Corp. are also under construction, and are scheduled for delivery in 2016. Finally, two 3600 TEU containerships are being constructed for Matson Navigation Co. Inc., with deliveries scheduled for 2018.
