LNG Industry,
The LNG-fuelled tugboat will be the first such vessel in Japan. It will conform to the IGF Code, and will be examined by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
The vessel will be owned by MOL, and is slated for construction at Kanagawa Dockyard Co. Ltd. Yanmar Co. Ltd, meanwhile, will provide the LNG-fuelled engines, whilst Osaka Gas Co. Ltd will provide the LNG itself. Once deployed in Osaka Bay in April 2019, it will be operated by Nihon Tug-Boat Co. Ltd.
The vessel will feature dual-fuel engines, and will escort large scale freighters in Osaka Bay and the Seto Inland Sea. MOL claims that the development of this tugboat will also encourage the initial development of an LNG fuel supply system for vessels in Osaka Bay.
MOL claims that the tugboat will be constructed as part of the company’s R&D project, ‘ISHIN NEXT – MOL SMART SHIP PROJECT’, and that the knowledge and expertise gained through its development and operation will be fed back to various types of LNG-fuelled ships, including the environmentally friendly ferry, ISHIN-II.
