Seaspan Ferries Corp. (SFC) has announced that the Seaspan Swift – the first of two new dual-fuelled/hybrid (diesel, LNG and battery) ferries – has arrived at the SFC Tilbury Terminal in Delta, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada.

This followed an eight-week journey, spanning 10 661 nautical miles, after construction was completed at Sedef Shipyard in Istanbul, Turkey. The vessel is 148.9 m long and can accommodate up to 59 trailers. Regulatory inspections and crew training programmes will be carried out throughout December 2016, before commencing operation on 2 January 2017. The vessel’s sister ship, Seaspan Reliant, is the company’s second dual-fuelled/hybrid ferry, and is currently undergoing testing and trials in Turkey, with arrival in Tilbury scheduled for early 2017.

In addition to the Seaspan Swift’s arrival in B.C., the vessel was also successfully bunkered with LNG for the first time. A tanker truck was used to carry out the operation, which was executed with assistance from VARD, FortisBC and Redwise.

Steve Roth, Vice President of SFC, said: “Seaspan Ferries is thrilled to welcome the Seaspan Swift, a state-of-the-art, technologically advanced vessel to our fleet.

“Today’s announcement not only demonstrates an unwavering commitment to our drop-trailer customers, it is a testament to how we live out our Core Value of Care for the Environment by ensuring the conservation of Canadian oceans and waterways. The Seaspan Swift will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions dramatically compared to other current alternatives while delivering the highest level of efficiency, performance and reliability.”
