Deltamarin and Brevik Technology announce new multigas carrier design

LNG Industry,

Deltamarin Ltd has announced that, in cooperation with Brevik Technology AS, it has launched an innovative multigas carrier design. Through combining the B. Delta design with separate cylindrical gas containment tanks, Deltamarin claims that the new design is cost-efficient and can be used for LNG carriers. It is designed for carriers with a capacity of 31 000 m3, but Deltamarin claims that it plans to create similar designs for larger vessels in the future.

Øystein Kristoffersen Sæther, the Managing Director of Brevik Technology, explained: “Up to now, gas carriers have been complex and expensive to design and construct. This is not the case anymore as Brevik Technology has developed cylindrical steel tanks, which are separate from the vessel hull.”

Mika Laurilehto, the Managing Director of Deltamarin, said: “As a bulk carrier, the vessel is easier and cheaper to build compared to a traditional gas carrier, and there may be many new potential yards capable of constructing such a vessel.”

The new design also allows the tank to expand, without putting stress on hull of the vessel. Additionally, the independent containment system can be retrofitted into an existing ship design. Thus, Laurilehto added: “This is where the ship owner can get significant benefits by choosing a readily available and highly efficient B. Delta hull design already proven in operation.”

Finally, Laurilehto and Sæther said: “Gas transportation needs are constantly growing along with increasing gas utilisation. We are very proud to boost industry development by offering ship owners a cost-efficient solution and making the construction of gas carriers easier.”
