LNG Industry,

Wärtsilä Corp. has announced that it has won a contract to provide equipment for four newbuild tankers. The vessels will be fuelled mainly by LNG, and will meet IMO Tier III requirements.

The ships will be constructed in China at the Avic Dingheng shipyard on behalf of the following three Swedish owners: Älvtank, Thun Tankers, and Furetank (two ships). They will be commercially managed by Furetank Chartering in the Gothia Tanker Alliance, and will be constructed according to a design developed by FKAB (a Swedish ship designer) together with Furetank.

For each vessel, Wärtsilä’s scope of supply will include the following:

  • A nine-cylinder Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel main engine.
  • Two Wärtsilä Auxpac 20 auxiliary engines.
  • The gas valve unit.
  • A controllable pitch propeller (CPP) compliant with Ice Class 1A.
  • A high performance nozzle.
  • A Wärtsilä Energopac rudder system.
  • A Wärtsilä selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system for the auxiliary engines.
  • 12 Wärtsilä deepwell cargo pumps.
  • Two Wärtsilä deepwell ballast pumps with a frequency control system.

In addition to this, the company will also provide each vessel with a gearbox and shaft alternator having ‘take-me-home’ functionality. This provides the auxiliary engine with propulsion power if the main engine is out of operation for whatever reason, ensuring that the ships can return to port safely. Delivery of all of the equipment is scheduled to begin in Spring 2017.

The company utilised its OPTI Design methodology in order to achieve optimal propulsion efficiency for these vessels. This methodology makes use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to accurately calculate the performance of the rudder, nozzle and propeller, including their interaction with the ship’s hull.

Aaron Bresnahan, Vice President, Sales, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, said: “Wärtsilä is the only company in the world capable of providing such a comprehensive scope of marine solutions from its own portfolio. Being a total solutions provider brings significant added value to our customers since delivery and scheduling risks are reduced, and the various systems can be integrated to achieve optimal performance and lower operating costs.”

Lars Höglund, Managing Director of Furetank, added: “These environmentally friendly tankers will run mainly on LNG fuel. No other company can match Wärtsilä’s experience and reference list in LNG solutions, and we are very confident that the Wärtsilä technology and broad range of solutions are the right choice.”
