LNG Industry,
Polaris is co-financed by the European Union’s TEN-T programme and is the world’s first icebreaker capable of running on both ultra-low-sulfur diesel and LNG. It has a total output of approximately 22 MW, making it Finland’s most powerful icebreaker. It is the eighth icebreaker in the company’s fleet.
The vessel has entered service on the 100th anniversary of Finland’s independence. In order to celebrate this centenary, the fore bulkhead of the vessel features the Finland 100 logo.
Pasi Järvelin, Master of IB Polaris, said: “We just bunkered 1000 m3 of low-sulfur diesel here in Katajanokka, Helsinki. We now head on to Pori, where more food provisions and 700 m3 of LNG will be taken aboard.
“This is a brand new icebreaker and we have not yet been in the thick of it. Based on the tests at Aker Arctic’s Model Testing Laboratory earlier, we expect great performance.”
