LR announces LNG-fuelled very large ore carrier joint design programme

The announcement was made at Gastech 2017, and is aimed at looking into the suitability of technologies for large ships, such as very large ore carriers (VLOCs). The introduction of IMO nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide emission limitations, as well as developments in the global gas supply, have meant that there is need for ship designs to evolve to provide alternatives to oil-fuelled designs.
In the statement, LR goes on to say that – because of these limitations – natural gas is the most favourable option for vessel fuel. The agreement between the companies outlines the joint design project for a conventional dual-fuel powered VLOC incorporating proven technologies. The next stage of the joint development project will look into the design and benefits of highly efficient next generation LNG-fuelled propulsion systems.
The parties have agreed a programme of work, which will address design, construction and operational aspects, including LNG bunkering. The ultimate aim of the project to develop a new, cost-efficient, safe, reliable and environmentally optimised design for large ore carriers.
