Crowley Maritime Corp. has announced that it has taken delivery of the second of four of the latest Jones Act product tankers from Philly Shipyard Inc. The other two vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2016.

The Texas is 50 000 DWT, has a barrel capacity of 330 000, is 600 ft long and will join Ohio – the sister ship that was received in October 2015 by Crowley. Both vessels are the first ever tankers to be awarded LNG-Ready 1 approval from ABS. This means that Crowley is able to convert the tankers to LNG fuel use in the future.

The vessels are based on a design by Hyundai Mipo Dockyards that considers new regulatory requirements, flexible cargo capability and fuel efficiency features. The vessels are capable of carrying both refined petroleum products and crude oil.

Jensen Maritime, the Seattle-based naval architecture and engineering subsidiary of Crowley, is currently supplying the construction management services for the vessels.

Rob Grune, the Senior Vice President and General Manager, Petroleum and Chemical Transportation at Crowley, said: “We are excited to close out 2015 with the addition of this technologically advanced vessel to our fleet of US coastwise product tankers.

“We constantly strive for ways to enhance the services we provide to our chemical and petroleum customers. The introduction of vessels like Ohio and Texas, with their advanced technology and environmentally friendly fuel options, prove that we are innovating the industry and we are doing it with American built, Jones Act vessels.”

Steinar Nerbovik, the President and CEO of Philly Shipyard, said: “We are proud to deliver another ship to Crowley and the first under our new name, Philly Shipyard. The Texas, like our 21 previously delivered vessels, continues the long tradition of men and women building quality vessels in Philadelphia.

“As we continue to build the eight ships in our backlog, we are always looking for more skilled men and women to add to our team.”
