11 Wärtsilä gas cargo handling systems specified for new vessels

Wärtsilä Corp. has announced that 11 of its gas cargo handling systems have been specified on a variety of vessels, including: six new very large gas carriers (VLGCs); two standard VLGCs; and three medium gas carriers (MGCs). The systems are scheduled to be delivered to the vessels between late 2016 and early 2018.

The complete system includes: cargo pumps; inert gas plants; compressors; heat exchangers and control systems. In addition to this, Wärtsilä will handle the engineering, as well as the arrangement drawings, site commissioning at the yards and training of the crew.

Three identical reliquefaction plants, which have an increased refrigerated capacity and better efficiency than older models installed on the VLGCs, will be installed on each ship. They will be more able to handle propane that has a high ethane content.

A Wärtsilä purge gas recovery unit will also be included in the overall system, and will collect hydrocarbons in the purge gas throughout the gassing up of the cargo tank. This will result in a decrease in hydrocarbons emissions and, therefore, improved environmental sustainability.

Vice President, Flow and Gas Solutions, Wärtsilä, said: “The efficiency and reliability of the Wärtsilä gas cargo handling systems have made us a recognised market leader in supplying systems for gas carrier vessels. During recent years we have delivered numerous systems for different sizes and types of these ships, and these latest contracts provide further evidence of our leading technologies in this field. We are very pleased to be again working on these projects with HHI and HMD to provide efficient solutions for the owners.”

The minimisation of time needed for carriers to be docked at gas terminals decreases operational costs, and is made possible by the efficient loading and unloading offered by the Wärtsilä systems.

The new type VLGCs are scheduled for delivery in 2017 and 2018, and are being built for Greek, Norwegian, Singaporean and Korean owners with a cargo capacity of 78 700 m3.
