German LNG Terminal gains interest

German LNG Terminal Gmbh has announced that it has garnered significant interest, and is ready to sign heads of agreement (HOA).

German LNG Terminal GmbH is a joint venture (JV) between Gasunie LNG Holding B.V., Vopak LNG Holding B.V. and Oiltanking GmbH, a subsidiary of Marquard & Bahls AG based in Hamburg, Germany. According to the statement, the terminal will provide a variety of services at Brunsbüttel, including the loading and unloading of LNG carriers, the temporary storage of LNG, regasification, feeding natural gas into the German natural gas network, and distribution of LNG via tank trucks, ships or rail tank cars.

Katja Freitag, spokesperson for the company, said: “Brunsbüttel is in the ideal geographical location. The port is easily accessible for the Q-Max carriers that bring the LNG. From there, it is only about three hours by ship to the port of Hamburg where the LNG is required as fuel for shipping. The port is based at the entrance to the Kiel Canal and enables access to the Baltic and Scandinavian markets.”

Europe has a total of 36 LNG terminals through which LNG is brought onshore. The average occupancy rate of existing terminals continued to increase last year. As of yet, Germany does not have an LNG terminal of its own, and therefore has to resort to Rotterdam or Zeebrugge, despite the fact that Germany is the LNG market in Europe.
