Using bio LNG, as opposed to regular LNG, will allow users to decrease CO2 emissions. In addition to this, the emitted CO2 from bio LNG is part of a short cycle: CO2 emissions are actually neutralised by the associated CO2 uptake. In other words, bio LNG is a sustainable option that can be used as a standalone fuel, or mixed with fossil-based LNG.
The study will be divided into three key areas:
- The existing and expected availability of production technologies and processes in the period until 2030.
- A market study that includes scenarios that go into the availability of sustainable feedstock and the future development of demand.
- The business cases for the production, transport and transshipment of bio LNG in the Rotterdam port area.
Eight companies that are members of the National LNG Platform will support the study with their technical, legal and financial expertise of the market. The partners aim to conclude the study by 2H17, and will use it to decide whether or not Rotterdam will develop a bio LNG programme.
LNG as a transport fuel for shipping and heavy road transport is already available from the Gate Terminal in the port of the Rotterdam. The study will merely look at the opportunities to develop bio LNG as a transport fuel at the port.
