China orders five LNG-powered containerships

According to Reuters, CMA CGM has announced that China State Shipbuilding Corp. has ordered 10 new vessels, with five to be powered by LNG, and the other five to be fitted with scrubbers instead.

Reuters reports that the €1.2 billion contract was signed during a state visit to France by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Under the terms of the deal, each containership will have a capacity to handle 15 000 TEUs. They will reportedly be delivered from 2021 onwards, and will be used to service the lines between Asia and the Mediterranean.
