Mitsubishi holds christening ceremony for next-generation LNG carrier

The vessel is the third Sayaringo STaGE (steam turbine and gas engines) type vessel, and is named LNG JUNO. It is Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s latest carrier to feature significant improvements in both LNG carrying capacity and fuel performance through the adoption of a more efficient hull structure and an innovative hybrid propulsion system. The ship will be used to transport LNG for projects such as the Freeport LNG project in Texas, US, in which Osaka Gas Co. Ltd is taking part.
The ceremony was held at the Koyagi Plant of MHI’s Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. The ship has an overall length of 297.5 m, a width of 48.94 m, a depth of 27 m, and a draft of 11.5 m. It also has a deadweight capacity of approximately 80 300 t, which is the largest within the Sayaringo series, and the tanks have a total holding capacity of 180 000 m3.
According to the statement, the Sayaringo STaGE is the successor to Sayaendo – a vessel highly acclaimed for its improved Moss-type spherical tanks and outstanding reliability. The adoption of the apple-shaped tanks and hybrid propulsion system functionality in the new Sayaringo STaGE has allowed for a significant increase in LNG carrying capacity, as well as overall fuel efficiency.
