Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has announced that it has reached an agreement to launch a joint study of an LNG-fuelled Capesize bulker with five other companies.

These companies are: BHP Billiton; DNV GL; Rio Tinto; Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI); and Woodside Energy. A letter of agreement was signed by the parties at a ceremony held in Singapore.

The joint research project is called ‘Green Corridor’ and aims to reduce NOx and SOx emissions from merchant vessels in advance of international treaties calling for stricter emissions standards. The project will also examine the technological and economic feasibility of an LNG-fuelled bulker.
