The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has announced that it has hosted the 18th meeting of the Russian-German Joint Commission on Maritime Shipping.

At the meeting, the delegations were lead by Vitaly Klyuev – Director, Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport of the RF Ministry of Transport – and Reinhard Klingen – Director-General, Waterways and Shipping of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Germany.

Points of discussion at the meeting included issues regarding marine environment protection disputed within the framework of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Arctic Council. This included issues concerning ballast water management, the use and carriage of heavy fuel oil (HFO) in the Arctic region, as well as limiting vessels’ SOx and NOx emissions. The parties also discussed issues concerning IMO development strategies and the IMO committees’ work formats.

During discussions regarding classification cooperation, the German party announced the high level of bilateral relations of the German Maritime Administration (BG Verkehr) and the Register as a recognised organisation. It was noted that BG Verkehr challenges RS to take part in the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) sessions, as well as in the work on preparation of BG Verkehr for the audits on the IMO’s behalf within the mandatory audit system to be scheduled for 2020.
