Following the recent announcement by Chevron Corp. that the Gorgon LNG project has started production, the facility’s first LNG cargo has successfully departed. The cargo will be delivered to Chubu Electric Power (Japan) via Chevron’s Asia Excellence LNG carrier.

The Executive Vice President, Chevron Midstream and Development, Mike Wirth, said: “Departure of the first cargo from the Gorgon Project is a key milestone in our commitment to be a reliable LNG provider for customers across the Asia-Pacific region.

“This is also important for our investors as we begin to generate revenue from a project we expect will operate for decades to come.”

The Gorgon LNG project – which is a joint venture (JV) between Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (47.3%), Chubu Electric Power (0.417%), Tokyo Gas (1%), Osaka Gas (1.25%), Shell (25%) and ExxonMobil (25%) – is supplied with gas from the Gorgon and Jansz-lo gas fields. It includes an LNG plant located on Barrow Island, which is capable of producing 15.6 million tpy of LNG. The project also includes a CO2 injection project, as well as a domestic gas plant, which is capable of supplying 300 terajoules of gas per day to Western Australia (WA).
