According to Reuters, Statoil is hosting discussions with the Lithuanian fertiliser producer, Achema, to deliver LNG. Achema is Lithuania’s largest consumer of gas, and has been looking to replace its recently expired contract with Gazprom.
Reuters reports that a deal is expected to be reached by the end of January 2016, but Achema is still considering a pipeline gas proposal from Gazprom.
Currently, Statoil already has a contract with Litgas, which is a subsidiary of the state-owned energy company, Lietuvos Energija. Under the five-year contract, Statoil supplies 540 million m3/yr of gas. Nonetheless, due to a decrease in demand owing to an increased use of biomass, Litgas wants to reduce the volume of gas provided by Statoil.
