Port of Rotterdam throughput increases, despite lower volumes of LNG

The Port of Rotterdam has announced that its total throughput for 1Q16 was almost identical to 1Q15. Whilst volumes of crude oil and oil products increased, lower volumes of dry bulk and containers offset the increase. Overall, 116.9 million t of cargo was handled by the port in 1Q16 – an increase of 0.2% compared to 1Q15.

However, LNG throughput declined by 72.6%. A significantly lower volume of LNG was re-exported to countries outside of the EU in the first quarter. Nonetheless, volumes are expected to recover over the rest of the year. Overall, the throughput of liquid bulk increased by 3.3% to 58.4 million t.

Allard Castelein, the Port of Rotterdam Authority CEO, said: “The port’s throughput grew by 4.9% in 2015. Our ambition is to match this high throughput volume in the present year. So far we are on course – but we still have three quarters to go.”
