Reuters claims that approximately 200 unionised workers will strike in order to press Pluspetrol (which owns a 27.2% controlling stake in the Camisea consortium that produces the majority of Peru’s natural gas in a remote jungle region) to offer improved wages and benefits in a new labour agreement.
Reuters claims that workers want improved internet and cellphone coverage in the jungle camp that they work in, as well as more indigenous guides to accompany them when they work near native communities.
Reportedly, talks with the company broke down earlier in December 2016. Union members have now voted in favour of the strike, and have also filed paperwork to obtain government permits for the strike.
