ExxonMobil celebrates double success

The world’s largest carbon capture plant

ExxonMobil announced on 10^th December 2010 the completion of an expansion to the world’s largest carbon dioxide capture plant in Wyoming, USA. The expanded plant will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance oil production in the US.

“This expansion will result in lower greenhouse gas emissions and help maximise the recovery of Wyoming’s oil resources,” said Randy Broiles, vice president, Americas, ExxonMobil. “These technologies could play a significant role in the future management of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.”

The US$ 86 million expansion includes the installation of compressors to capture 50% more CO₂ for potential use in enhanced oil recovery and other industrial uses. Enhanced oil recovery involves the injection of CO₂ into reservoirs to produce additional oil and gas. The CO₂ for this project is captured from the natural gas streams produced from fields in Wyoming. The gas streams contain significant amounts of CO₂ and other components that are removed at the LaBarge processing plant.

With the expansion, the plant has the capacity to capture approximately 365 million ft³/d of CO₂ from the gas streams; equivalent to the amount emitted by more than 1.5 million cars.

The captured CO₂ is sold to companies for enhanced oil recovery, helping to extend the productive lives of mature oil fields and producing more energy supplies for America.

Qatar reaches milestone LNG capacity

On the other side of the planet, ExxonMobil congratulated Qatar on becoming the world’s largest producer of liquefied natural gas at a ceremony today marking the production capacity milestone of 77 million tpy.

The event was celebrated in Ras Laffan Industrial City at a ceremony under the patronage and in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of the State of Qatar and His Excellency Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Attiyah the Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry. Also in attendance were Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer of Exxon Mobil Corporation, ministers, senior government officials and delegations from Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas and RasGas.

ExxonMobil is a participant in 12 of Qatar’s 14 LNG projects, including two Qatargas joint ventures and three RasGas joint ventures. ExxonMobil also helped develop the newest classes of LNG carriers with the 210 000 m³ capacity Q-Flex ships and the 265 000 m³ Q-Max vessels which carry LNG to receiving terminals jointly developed by Qatar and ExxonMobil in the United Kingdom, Italy and the USA, and to markets around the globe.

Combining the unique strengths of Qatar Petroleum and ExxonMobil in a model partnership enabled the development of innovative solutions resulting in the extremely successful LNG business Qatar has today.

ExxonMobil delivered advanced technologies, strong project execution and economies of scale to reduce the cost of producing and transporting LNG, thereby extending the ability of Qatar Petroleum, Qatargas and RasGas to help meet energy requirements around the world.
