Enagás has released a statement claiming that the CORE LNGas hive project has successfully carried out the first pilot test of multimodal transport of LNG in Europe.

The initiative has reportedly consisted of the transportation of LNG in an ISO container from Huelva to Melilla by road, rail and sea.

The LNG was reportedly loaded onto the container at the Enagás regasification plant, which is located in the Port of Huelva. Then, the gas was transferred to the Huelva Port Railway Terminal by truck, where it was subsequently transferred to a train. The train then travelled to Majarabique station in Seville. From there, it was transported by truck to the Port of Algeciras in Cadiz. Finally, it was transferred to a vessel that completed the journey from Algeciras to Melilla.

According to the statement, this pilot test proves how ISO containers can be used as an effective, versatile and flexible solution for the transportation of gas. In addition to this, it demonstrates the efficiency of railway as a new logistical solution to respond to the demand for alternative fuels. In turn, this opens up new locations and markets to the possibility of using LNG.

The success of this initiative has been made possible thanks to the project partners: Enagás; Renfe Mercancías; Cespa; the Port Authorities of Bahía de Algeciras, Huelva, Melilla and Cartagena. In addition to this, Crisergas also collaborated in the project, carrying out the transportation operations of the ISO containers under the logistical supervision of Cepsa, as well as Setolazar (ISO container owner).
