Atlas Copco to provide compressor technology for modern LNG carriers

According to the statement, the order, which was placed by Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea – is for a total of eight HD centrifugal gas compressors, eight oil-free gas screw compressors, as well as all of the necessary heaters and vaporisers. The equipment will be used on four 180 000 m³ vessels commissioned by Celsius Tankers. Atlas Copco claims that it will start shipping the first units to the customer in October this year, with the rest of the machinery to be delivered in 2Q20.

The new vessels will make use of Atlas Copco’s new oil-free gas screw compressors to feed their XDF engines (an industry first). This new compressor technology was specially designed to meet the requirements of modern carriers, including the XDF pressure requirements and reduced flow of boil-off gas (BOG) from improved insulation measures. The oil-free design also enables longer maintenance intervals compared to oil-flooded compressors, and can be used with a reliquefaction system without any risk of oil contamination in the heat exchangers or the LNG cargo.

Robert Radimeczky, President of the Gas and Process Division, said: “This order is a milestone in our marine LNG product development. To be able to provide the first ever oil-free gas screw compression technology for carrier vessels is a significant step in the evolution of our products.”
