LNG loading operations affected by Australian cyclone

Cyclone Damien reportedly crossed the coast near Dampier, WA, making landfall on Saturday afternoon, with winds of up to 200 km/hr. No damage has been reported, but a number of homes in WA lost power briefly. In addition to this, Dampier and Port Hedland – two of the region’s largest commodity ports – were closed for one to three days.
Reuters reports that the North West Shelf and Pluto LNG facilities are located near the Port of Dampier, which re-opened on Tuesday. At least two LNG cargo loading operations at the North West Shelf project were cancelled, although it is not yet clear if these operations will be rescheduled.
A Woodside spokeswoman said: “As expected, we were required to briefly shut-in production at certain facilities, but overall we have withstood the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Damien very well.
“We are currently producing from both of our Karratha onshore facilities and are working to resume normal safe, reliable and efficient operations as soon as possible.”
According to Reuters, the closures have resulted in a queue of 13 vessels waiting to load LNG in WA. This includes vessels at Woodside’s plants, as well as at Gorgon and Wheatstone.
