Chevron launches CO2 capture system for Gorgon LNG project

Reportedly, the carbon storage project has seen a number of delays, pushing back the startup date back by two years. This was because Chevron found problems with valves and pipeline equipment during the commissioning phase of the AUS$2.5 billion injection system.
Reuters quotes Chevron Australia Managing Director, Al Williams, as saying: “We are pleased to reach the first milestone of safely starting the operation of the Gorgon carbon dioxide injection system, one of the world’s largest greenhouse gas mitigation projects ever undertaken by industry.”
According to Reuters, the system will ramp up over several months, and will decrease the Gorgon LNG project’s emissions by 40% over the complete project lifetime. In total, Chevron claims that the system will bury 3.4 million – 4 million tpy of CO2 when fully operational.
Reuters reports the Gorgon project was approved in 2009 under the condition that some of the CO2 from its gas processing operations would be stored.
