Salish Raven arrives in B.C.

This followed a 41-day, 10 440-nautical-mile journey from Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. in Gdansk, Poland. Once the vessel clears Canadian customs and the final inspections have been carried out, it will be officially handed over to BC Ferries. It will proceed to the company’s refit facility in Richmond on 8 June to prepare for operational service in the Southern Gulf Islands in the Autumn.

The President and CEO of BC Ferries, Mark Collins, said: “We are proud to welcome Salish Raven, our third natural gas-fuelled ship, home to B.C. and into our fleet.

“The Salish Class vessels are high quality, state-of-the-art vessels, which will serve British Columbians and tourists alike for decades to come.”

The company’s first dual-fuel vessel, Salish Orca, was introduced into service on the Powell River – Comox route in May, whilst the Salish Eagle – the company’s second Salish Class vessel – is scheduled to start service on the Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands route in late June. The Salish Class vessels are 107 m long, and are capable of carrying 145 vehicles, as well as 600 passengers and crew. The ships feature two car decks and have a service speed of 15.5 knots. Each vessel is powered by three Wärtsilä 8L20DF engines and has a gross tonnage of 8728 t.

The Salish Raven has had special artwork designed by Musqueam Nation’s Thomas Cannell. This will be applied on the ship in B.C., as Poland has temperatures below ideal for its application.
