PFLNG 2 to be operational in 2020

In April 2017, the Malaysian state-owned oil firm announced that it had loaded its first cargo from its first unit, PFLNG 1. In doing so, it became the first ever company to produce LNG on a floating production facility. The Chief Executive of PFLNG, Feisal Azhar, said that the unit will reach its designed capacity of 1.2 million tpy by June 2017, and that it will be stationed at Kanowit in East Malaysia for five years.
The second unit, PFLNG 2, will enable the liquefaction, production and offloading of natural gas in the Rotan field, which is located 240 km off of the east Malaysian state of Sabah. It will have a processing capacity of 1.5 million tpy.
Petronas’ acting vice president LNG assets, development and production, Adnan Zainal Abidin, reportedly stated that the development of PFLNG 2 was on track, and that there has been interest from other industry players in using both FLNG units.
According to Reuters, Adnan also noted that the second facility will cost less than the first, but declined to specify the cost of the development. He added that Asia will remain a major customer for LNG, with India having significant demand for the fuel, and with Thailand also purchasing greater volumes of LNG.
