Hummel LNG barge continues to work successfully

Becker Marine Systems has announced that the Hummel LNG Hybrid Barge, which provides low-emission power to AIDAsol in the port of Hamburg, Germany, is continuing to work perfectly, despite reports saying otherwise.

The Managing Director of Becker Marine Systems, Henning Kuhlmann, said: “Contrary to reports published elsewhere, Hummel is working smoothly and at full capacity.

“We are extremely satisfied at our record of more than 40 MWh of power over the longest possible period from the morning to the evening, which is equivalent to an entire supply cycle for AIDAsol in Hamburg.”

Hummel supplied over eight hours of electricity to AIDAsol on both of its previous layovers at the HafenCity Terminal (22 May and 23 June 2016, respectively). By October 2016, AIDAsol will have called at the terminal a total of 15 times, with Hummel providing environmentally friendly power each time during its layover.

Kuhlmann went on to say: “The inflexible restrictions remain a source of annoyance. The fact that we are still speaking of a test phase despite all the progress we have made in just one year of operation has less to do with our technical capabilities and is more a result of the restrictions imposed on us.”

For example, in July 2016, an alternative system of a landside power plant will undergo a general certification procedure according to the International Electronic Consortium standard, executed by Bureau Veritas. Despite the fact that all of the barge’s components are certified, they still require further inspection together with AIDAsol before the faultless power supply by the barge can be officially certified.

Kuhlmann added: “At the moment there are two different landside power supply systems available in Hamburg […] so it would be fantastic to see larger numbers of cruise ships converting to this modern technology and making a valuable contribution to improving the air quality at the Port of Hamburg.”
